DAY NINE -- CUMBERLAND ISLAND TO JEKYLL ISLAND

DAY NINE -- CUMBERLAND ISLAND TO JEKYLL ISLAND

A short day on the water, but a full day, nonetheless. We got up early and were underway by 0820. We were surprised to see that the big trawler anchored further up the Brickhill River had left. He must have started very early and snuck past us when we were still sleeping. We ran slow the entire twelve miles to the Jekyll Harbor Marina (1700 rpm, just 7-8 mph depending on the current) to enjoy the scenery and the quiet morning. Plus, the passage across St. Andrews Sound is a bit tricky, and we wanted to get it right. We pulled up to the marina fuel dock just after ten, filled up with diesel and pumped out the holding tank. We took exactly 100 gallons, which meant we have averaged 1.47 mpg since our last fueling, so our fuel economy is running consistent.

We were in touch yesterday with friends from our (former) Oxbow neighborhood back in Indy who have a house on Jekyll Island and were very gracious to offer us the use of their golf cart and beach chairs and beach. Based on their input we decided to spend two nights at the island, and to stay at the historic Jekyll Island Club Resort (which goes back to 1888).

Once Craunological II was docked we checked in at the marina office and got a complimentary (but temporary) golf cart which we used to go to our friends' house and get their golf cart. We took both carts back to the marina, then took our friends' cart to a lunch spot right on the beach, which had spectacular views of the ocean, but just average bar food. (That's Cumberland Island in the distance.)

After lunch we went back to the marina to give the boat a good cleaning (inside and out) and pack our bags for the hotel. We checked in, cleaned up, and had cocktails in the old bar while working on the blog. We tried to have dinner down on the wharf (where the millionaires used to dock their yachts back in the day) but it was full, so we ended up instead at a nice Irish pub in "town" and then had a sunset cocktail at the wharf. (There seems to be a lot of talk about cocktails on this blog. We'll have to look into that.)

  4. Thought we would take a moment to comment on our experience visiting and boating with the Crauns. First of all, my compliments to Janet and John on their boating expertise. Janet can read a chart and John can follow orders! Seriously, their seamanship is extraordinary, especially with a vessel that is brand new to them. (Thrusters help with the parallel parking). But most of all, they are a joy to be with. They are just as fun here in north Florida as they are in Naples.
And the boat... Craunological2 is a dream. Very comfortable. And the sightseeing is outstanding, especially from the sky bridge. You don't have to be an engineer like John to appreciate all of the well-thought conveniences. And she is beautiful, with tasteful appointments and top shelf materials.
It was a Spring highlight to spend time with Janet and John and get to travel a leg of their journey. They are excited to get Ashley on board and for the rest of their trip. We are excited for them and wish them continued success on their adventure.
