8/7/22 -- Port Jefferson to Shelter Island
Another hot and humid day (close to 90 degrees) with a stiff breeze out of the southwest (15-20 mph). We got underway at 10:30 and ran along the north shore headed for the tip of the North Fork of Long Island. Our goal was to go past the big fancy house for which Zach is the architect out on Tyndal Point (just east of the dock for the south ferry to Shelter Island) and then on to the Shinnecock Canal at the western end of Peconic Bay to meet up with some friends of ZJ&A. All went according to plan until we rounded the narrow point separating Noyak and Peconic Bays at about 2:30 and ran head-on into a really nasty chop. (Peconic Bay is shallow and runs SW to NE and had all day to build a nice chop with that stiff SW wind. Interested readers might want to consult Google Maps to follow along.) No one was interested in fighting this chop for eight miles, so we changed plans and dropped ZJ&A off at a little marina in Noyak and they took an Uber to the nearest Long Island Railroad station and took a train home. Taking the train was the plan all along, but they had to drop seeing their friends. Meanwhile Janet and I took the boat around the north side of Shelter Island and down the east side to Coecles Harbor (pronounced "cockles), which was a beautiful and well-protected anchorage. We dropped anchor around 4:30 and immediately commenced cocktail hour. Nice dinner aboard and early to bed.
