BROOKLYN -- PREPARING FOR PHASE TWO
Dateline Brooklyn, NY -- August 5, 2022. We returned to Craunological II again today. Found her safe and sound at the Mill Basin Marina with all my requested maintenance work performed. Very happy to see her again. Had her put back in the water (I don't like the marina guys calling it "splashing") and tied up at a vacant slip at the marina for the night. We'll spend the night at Zach and June's apartment and then take off in the morning with them and Avery for a nice boat ride through New York harbor and up the East River into Long Island Sound. Our plan is to drop them off somewhere on the North Fork late Sunday afternoon so they can take the Long Island Railroad back home.
We left our hotel in Tarrytown NY about nine and arrived at the marina about quarter to eleven after an uneventful but hairy ride through NYC traffic. Janet has done almost all of the driving during our landlubber sojourn and this 46-mile stretch tested all her driving skills. We were finished at the marina a bit after one o'clock and went to meet Zach and June for lunch at one of our favorite places on Emmons Avenue (Opera Cafe Lounge -- a Turkish restaurant). After lunch Mimi went back to Z&J's apartment to do laundry while I turned in our rental car. Then we did some grocery shopping for the boat (we took everything off of her when we stored her at the marina) and for Zach to cook our dinner. It was almost seven by the time we got back to Z&J's place. Doesn't sound like we did much, but there went the day. Everything seems to take more time in Brooklyn. Complicated logistics.
Our plan for phase two is to take the boat up to MacMahan Island for our usual one-week cottage rental (August 14-21), but this time we'll have our own boat instead of renting one! After MacMahan, Janet and I will run the boat on up to Eastport Maine on the Canadian border, then back to the Boston area to spend Labor Day Weekend with Ashley's family. We'll leave the boat in Boston for a couple weeks while we go to Europe for a Rhine River cruise (I'm sure I can adjust to not being at the helm). After we come back from Europe, we'll take about ten days to run the boat back to the NYC area and then hire a guy to put it on a trailer and drive it back to Naples. So, phase two will have two parts. Complicated logistics.
For those wondering what Janet and I were doing while Craunological II sat on blocks at the Mill Basin Marina from June 30 through August 5, here's a quick summary:
> June 30 & July 1 -- stayed with Zach and June
> July 2-9 -- stayed at Airbnb house in the Berkshires with kids and grandkids
> July 10-14 -- spent a few days back in Naples
> July 15-22 -- in Indianapolis staying with and visiting friends
> July 23-26 -- west side of Cleveland seeing Janet's younger sister and family
> July 27-28 -- stayed with friends in Youngstown
> July 29-31 -- New Castle PA seeing Janet's older sister and family
> August 1 -- Saratoga Springs NY -- travel day
> August 2-3 -- Burlington VT for a board meeting
> August 4 -- Tarrytown NY -- travel day
We had a great time seeing family and friends, and loved our drive up to Burlington, Vermont. We got to be pretty good at living out of suitcases, but also tired of it. Complicated logistics.
Nice to see that things are safe! Good luck with the rest of your journey!
