We got underway at 0830 under grey skies and with much cooler temperatures. The wind had shifted around to the NE and high temps were forecast for the mid-70s. A welcome change. The sun finally showed up around noon.

Our ride across the Rhode Island coast was very sloppy -- and that was with a NOAA forecast calling for 2 to 3-foot waves. I'd hate to see what it was like on Tuesday when they were predicting 4-6 footers. It was a nasty sea with no discernable pattern to it. A guy at the marina in Falmouth called a "washing machine" sea. No whitecaps, just layers of swells and chop coming from all directions. This was in the stretch from Fishers Island to Vineyard Sound, where the water is open to the North Atlantic. There was a deep 4-6 swell coming from the south, and on top of that just random noise. The nasty seas must be the result of some combination of tidal currents in and out of Narragansett Bay, Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound.

The seas calmed once we reached Vineyard Sound, and our ride from there was very nice, though still with grey skies. There was a fair amount of boat traffic between fishing boats, ferry boats and pleasure boats. We pulled into our slip at the Falmouth Town Marina a bit before two. Damon and Griffin walked over from their hotel in town about an hour later and we swapped travel stories. They had taken the ferry back from Nantucket earlier in the day. We walked into town for dinner, which was a great little Thai place. Afterwards we sat out on the back deck and helped Griffin do the NYT online crossword puzzle. They walked back to their hotel about nine and we went to bed soon thereafter.
