DAY TWENTY-ONE -- SOUTHPORT TO TOPSAIL BEACH

DAY TWENTY-ONE -- SOUTHPORT TO TOPSAIL BEACH

We had a local car company come pick us up at 9:30 for the 10:00 service at St. Phillips Episcopal Church in downtown Southport. The service was nice enough and the people were very friendly, but I'm sorry that we didn't get to worship in the old church next door (1850's vintage) which now serves as their chapel. After church we found a good lunch spot in town, and we noticed some other worshippers came in right after us so we figured we better not talk about the sermon or the music or anything. Southport has a nice downtown, but it was already stinking hot and humid when we went to church, let alone when we came out.

We got the same car service to take us back to the boat and got underway right away, even though the sky to the north was threatening. We figured that we've run in the rain before, and we wanted to get some mileage done. We were underway just after one, and the rain came about two and lasted for an hour. We were in the Cape Fear River then, which is big and wide and deep with a strong current.

The good thing about running on an overcast and rainy Sunday afternoon was that there was hardly any boat traffic, so were making good time. We had decided earlier that we would anchor out for the night, and there was a recommended spot in Sloop Creek behind Topsail Beach. We set the hook at five and fired up the generator so we could run the AC. Janet stayed aboard while I went off in the dinghy to see if I could find the public landing mentioned in the cruising guide (I wanted to walk across the peninsula and see the ocean), but I didn't have any luck and some locals that I spoke with couldn't help. The anchorage was good except for occasional local traffic that didn't bother to slow down, so we rocked a bit now and then. All was quiet by bedtime, however. The setting was nice, with a big salt marsh to our landward side and nice homes and cottages side-by-side on the Topsail side.

  1. Won’t make any jokes about Robert Dinero on Cape Fear. Glad you got into Southport. FYI re the ocean side below Wilmington & Carolina Bch & Kure, that’s where “Weekend at Bernies” was filmed 😜 Rick D.

  2. Glad you got to see a little of charming Southport.
Are you seeing any aircraft from Camp Lejeune? They are always interesting to view from below.

  3. I want to see pictures of the “salty dog” & his first mate too! U look pretty clean shaven on day 15! Looks like a fun adventure!

  4. Agree with Pat: More selfies! I don't know how southerners deal with heat and humidity. I'll take a 5 degree day over a 90 degree + 90% humidity day any day if the week.
