DAY TEN -- JEKYLL ISLAND
DAY TEN -- JEKYLL ISLAND
Got up in time to have breakfast in the original big fancy dining room (where they now only serve breakfast) and get to the island museum in time for the 9:30 trolley tour. I won't bore you with the details but suffice it to say that the Jekyll Island Club was for the billionaires of the late 19th and early 20th century. They owned the entire island, used it for hunting and later added tennis, a pool, etc. Much of the old architecture (the hotel and a dozen little 10,000+ sq ft "cottages") is still intact and is very interesting.
After the tour we took the golf cart to our friends' house to see their stretch of beach, did a bit of shopping in town, and then back to the hotel for lunch by the pool. We took the two o'clock historic tour of the hotel, which was interesting, although the docent just wouldn't stop going on and on about the place. We recovered with some quiet time at the pool, cleaned up for an early dinner at the resort's annex over on the ocean side, then watched the sunset through the live oaks back at the main resort on the salt marsh side.
P.S. Here is a map of the GA coast that might help folks follow along:
P.P.S. Avid readers might want to go back and revisit the last few blogs, as we have posted more photos now that we have decent internet service.
Beautiful shot of sunset through the trees and I like the map.
ReplyDeletesay hi to Sapelo Island and "listen" for chachalacas as you go by--they are Valley birds that were introduced there years ago. there is still a population there, I read, but of course the boat may not go close enough!
ReplyDeletePS I haven't been there myself, but heard a lot about it from my former "boss" at Tall Timbers Research Station, near Tallahassee, where I did an internship
DeleteVery interesting. Since I am not a good traveler I can vicariously live the experience by reading your information. Have a great time.
